GROWING FOOD IN VERTICAL FARMS

One of the world’s largest vertical farms was launched in the United Kingdom!

The vertical farm is based in Lydney, Gloucestershire, and will have the equivalent of 70 tennis courts worth of growing space.

James Lloyd-Jones, founder and CEO of the Jones Food Company that is behind the development, said in a statement that they “plan to be able to supply 70% of the UK’s fresh produce within the next 10 years.” This would significantly cut down on the air and road miles food has to travel to reach the UK, while also making it less reliant on other countries, as around 46% of all food consumed in Britain is imported.

Food in a vertical farm can be grown entirely without pesticides and uses 95% less water. Risks such as fertilizer runoff—a major source of water pollution where excess liquid flows across the surface of the land, transporting fertilizer into nearby rivers and streams—can be avoided too.

While vertical farming is still a small part of the UK’s agriculture industry, developments like this show the innovative ways the world is learning to grow produce!
